History & Background
Constructed during the reign of Pachacuti and completed in the early 16th century, Sacsayhuamán was a military stronghold and temple complex. Its massive zig-zag walls are made of megalithic stones weighing up to 125 tons.
How to Arrive
You can walk uphill from Plaza de Armas (~25-30 minutes, steep stairs) or take a quick taxi ride from the hotel lobby.
Practical Travel Tips
- Visit early in the morning to beat the tourist crowds and capture beautiful soft light.
- Walk up slowly to avoid altitude sickness (soroche).
- Look out for llamas grazing freely inside the ruins area.
