Plaza de Armas

The historic main square of Cusco, surrounded by colonial architecture and the Cathedral.

History & Background

During the Inca Empire, this square was known as "Huacaypata" (the place of weeping/celebration) and was double its current size. It was the administrative and ceremonial center of Tahuantinsuyo.

How to Arrive

Walk straight up Calle Santa Clara from the hotel, continue past Plaza San Francisco and onto Calle Portal Nuevo.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Visit at sunset to watch the plaza lights turn on against the dark blue sky.
  • Beware of street vendors who can be quite persistent.
  • Enjoy a cup of local coffee in one of the second-story balconies overlooking the square.
