Built in the 15th century by Inca Emperor Pachacuti, Machu Picchu was an elite mountain retreat. Abandoned during the Spanish conquest, it remained hidden from the outside world until Hiram Bingham publicised it in 1911.
What to Expect
Perched 2,430 meters above the Urubamba Valley, Machu Picchu is the crown jewel of Inca engineering — a citadel of temples, terraces and plazas carved into a mountain ridge. Most visitors spend 3–4 hours exploring the Sun Gate, the Temple of the Sun and the Intihuatana stone, then return to Aguas Calientes for lunch and the train back.
