Machu Picchu

The iconic Inca citadel and UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

History & Background

Built in the 15th century by Inca Emperor Pachacuti, Machu Picchu was an elite mountain retreat. Abandoned during the Spanish conquest, it remained hidden from the outside world until Hiram Bingham publicised it in 1911.

What to Expect

Perched 2,430 meters above the Urubamba Valley, Machu Picchu is the crown jewel of Inca engineering — a citadel of temples, terraces and plazas carved into a mountain ridge. Most visitors spend 3–4 hours exploring the Sun Gate, the Temple of the Sun and the Intihuatana stone, then return to Aguas Calientes for lunch and the train back. Tickets are limited to a few thousand per day, and the site closes in the late afternoon, so plan a full day from Cusco.

How to Arrive

Take a train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo station to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), then ride the official Consettur bus up to the archaeological park entrance.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Book your entrance tickets and train tickets at least 2-3 months in advance.
  • Bring your original passport; you cannot enter without it.
  • Hire a certified guide at the entrance to fully appreciate the rich history and architecture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book Machu Picchu tickets in advance?

Can I visit Machu Picchu in one day from Cusco?

Yes. The most common plan is a 6:00 a.m. train from Poroy or Ollantaytambo, 2–3 hours at the citadel, and an afternoon train back to Cusco.

Is Machu Picchu included in the Boleto Turistico?

No. Machu Picchu requires its own entrance ticket and a separate train ticket; the Boleto Turistico covers Cusco's city sites and the Sacred Valley circuit.
